Introducing the facility ‘Operational Status’ filter on Capacitor
Users can now find facilities that are coming online in future quarters to address the capacity bottleneck.
We launched Capacitor (capacitor.bio) in November 2022 and have been overwhelmed by the response from our growing user base. We’re always working to make the directory more useful and impactful. Capacitor usage has underscored the imbalance between demand for fermentation capacity and existing supply. But more capacity is on the way.
Today, we’re excited to announce that the facility ‘Operational Status’ filter is live on the platform. This means that for the first time, we’ll offer users the ability to see fermentation projects that are actively under development (meaning not yet built) along with the future technical specifications of these facilities. Additionally, we’ve discovered that there are many fermentation facilities that were previously operating but no are no longer operating today. So, we’re cataloging these for users too. Users can now filter for facilities that are ‘Active’, ‘Under Development’ and ‘Inactive’ to find one that meets their needs.
Together, this expansion will offer users the most comprehensive view of all past, present, and future global fermentation capacity options.
How we define the facility operational status
- Active: The facility is currently operating and serving customers.
- Under Development: The facility has secured a specific site and development is underway.
- Inactive: The facility is not currently operating and serving customers.
Why this is important
The fermentation capacity bottleneck should come as no surprise to the industry. Recent reports, including the OSTP’s Bold Goals for U.S. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing and our ‘Global State of Fermentation Capacity’, highlight the gaps in commercial-scale capacity for fermentation.
Many companies, including Synonym, are currently working to build commercial capacity for fermentation. Users can filter on Capacitor for ‘Under Development’ listings to better understand how much capacity is coming online in future quarters and keep a closer eye on how we’re closing the gap.
Are you building a facility?
If you’re currently building a fermentation facility, we encourage you to list it on Capacitor today at www.capacitor.bio/facilities/new.
We look forward to onboarding more active, underdevelopment and inactive facilities to Capacitor in the coming weeks.
